An Unidentified Flipp*n Family
from research of Hazel J. Hayes, descendant
[updated 11 Apr 2004]

Julia FLIPPIN was born 17 Jan 1808 near Richmond, VA and married James SOUTHALL.  She was a widow when she arrived in TN after James died at New Orleans on 16 Feb 1815 during the War of 1812, serving in the 2nd Regiment of TN Militia under Colonel John Cocke, assigned to the company under John Dalton.  All were under the command of General Andrew Jackson.

Their children were:
1.  John M. SOUTHALL (b. 1805/06) who married Sousanna CRAIG 24 Jan 1826 and had
three children:
(a) James F. SOUTHALL (b. 12 Nov 1826).  On the 1860 Hickman Co., TN census, he
was living with Joseph LOMAX and his age was given as 35.
(b) Martha F. SOUTHALL (13 Jan 1828 - 1861)  married Josiah COTHAM.  She may
have been called "Mary."  Her children were:  Stephen Jones, Mary Susan (b.
1849), John Thomas (b. 1851), Sarah Frances (b. 1854), James Andrew (b. 1857),
and Martha Roenia (b. 1861).  NOTE:  A Stephen J. Cotham married Mary R.
PINKERTON 12 Jul 1866.  This was no doubt the Stephen JONES shown above.
(c)  John W. SOUTHALL (b. 7 Mar 1829).
2.  William Albert SOUTHALL (17 Jan 1808 Richmond, VA - 24 Oct 1892) married Sara
Anne Natalie SCOTT (24 Oct 1816 Richmond, VA - 21 Oct 1887), daughter of Robert
and Lucy (HUGHES) SCOTT, on 19 Dec 1844 in Maury Co., TN and had 8 children:
(a) Peyton Onseco SOUTHALL
(b) Iowa Clementine SOUTHALL married George W. SHARP.
(c) James Robert Washington SOUTHALL
(d) William Albert SOUTHALL, Jr.
(e) Turner Sanford Greenfield SOUTHALL
(f) Sarah Ann SOUTHALL married (1) Robert RAY and (2) Green SHARP.
(g) Wisconstine SOUTHALL lived 6 days.
(h) John Thomas SOUTHALL died at age 11 years.
(h) Gustavus Beauregard SOUTHALL
3.  Elizabeth R. SOUTHALL (b. 9 May 1812) married Sebron WILLIS and they had 11
children:
(a) Mary Jane WILLIS (b. 1831) married James E. FITZGERALD.
(b) William M. WILLIS (b. 1833)
(c) Infant WILLIS (b. 1835)
(d) Henry WILLIS (b. 1837), twin
(e) Iola WILLIS (b. 1837), twin
(f) Richard Thomas WILLIS (b. 1839, but the 1900 census gives Oct 1837)
(g) John M. WILLIS (b. 1841)
(h) Fannie WILLIS (b. 1843)
(i) Elizabeth WILLIS (b. 1845)
(j) Susan WILLIS (b. 1847)
(k) Martha WILLIS (b. 1852)
NOTE:  At the time of Sebron's estate settlement in Dec 1854, the only children named
were:  William, Henry, Richard, John, Fanny, Elizabeth and Martha WILLIS.  Iola and
Susan had evidently died.
4.  Susan S. "Susannah" SOUTHALL (b. 15 Aug 1814 Cumberland Co., VA) married
in 1832 to Josiah LOMAX and to her second husband Richard MEECE 28 Jun 1841.
Here's where the names of Susannah and LOMAX gets a little tricky.
A.  I show Sousanna (CRAGG) SOUTHALL, widow of John M. SOUTHALL, marrying
second to Joseph LOMAX from Hickman Co., TN.
B. In Spence's book, page 103, District 9, First to locate in Lowe's Bend was
SELLARS, who settled and built a house in 1808, it is still standing as of 1900.
After the death of SELLARS, his widow married Josiah LOMAX, she died in 1832
and Josiah LOMAX married Susan SOUTHALL.  They had two children named
Thomas LOMAX of Humphreys Co. and William LOMAX who died in 1861.
QUESTION:  Do we have the correct Sousanna / Susannah connected to the proper
LOMAX?
5.  Martha Frances SOUTHALL (b. 1815).  The 1860 Maury Co., TN census gives her age
as 44.  She married Abraham MEECE.  Their children as listed on the 1860 census
were:
(a) Elizabeth P. MEECE (b. 1848)
(b) William J. MEECE (b. 1850)
(c) Charles W. MEECE (b. 1852)
(d) Catharine L. MEECE (b. 1853)
(e) George W. MEECE (b. 1855)
(f) Onseco MEECE (b. 1852)
(g) Mary F. MEECE (b. 1853)
NOTE:  Were these all Martha's children?  Note the two girls born the same year.  On
the 1870 census, Onseco MEECE, age 19, and Mary F., age 18, were living with
William Albert SOUTHALL and his family in Maury Co., TN.  Were they brother and
sister or could they have been married to each other?  John WILLIS, age 18, was also
living in the William Albert SOUTHALL home.

Early findings indicate that William may have had two sisters who married FLIPPINs.  [CLARIFICATION by Hazel Hayes:  Two daughters of James and Judith (WILKINSON) SOUTHALL of Williamson Co., TN did in fact marry FLIPPINs, Jesse and Phillip.  They were not the sisters of William Albert SOUTHALL, Sr. of Hickman Co.]

The following names were found in the trunk of William Albert SOUTHALL.  The handwriting as pertains to the words "Family Tree" are definitely the handwriting of William Albert SOUTHALL; however, where he listed the children of John M. SOUTHALL, someone had printed John's name above the children of James (the father of John M.) and vise-versa the name of James above the name of John M.'s children.
[CLARIFICATION by Hazel Hayes:  Also John M. SOUTHALL did not marry Jugie (?)
FLIPPIN.  Julia or Jugie FLIPPIN was John M. Southall's mother.
Elizabeth SOUTHALL was born 9 May 1812 but she was John M. SOUTHALL's sister.
Martha SOUTHALL }
Francis SOUTHALL} This is one person - not two.
Susanna SOUTHALL, born 15 Aug 1814 married Richard MEECE on 28 Jun 1841.  This is
correct but she was a sister to John M. SOUTHALL.
John W. SOUTHALL was born 7 Mar 1829 and he was the youngest child of John M.
SOUTHALL.]

Any assistance with these FLIPPIN - SOUTHALL connections and the identification of FLIPPIN parents would be greatly appreciated!
