Some Phlippo / Flippo Information

LL. M. "Marty" Flippin received this interesting information on the Flippo family history from Norm Flippo in February 1998.  We are still not certain of any overlap between Flippin and Flippo but the information is interesting and may be helpful to a Flippo researcher.

From Norm Flippo:

Jacob PHLIPPO / FLIPPO, Sr. (born c1640) and his family settled in Caroline Co., VA about 1683, having arrived with a group of French Huguenots.  He settled on a tract of land adjacent to Joshua STOREY, both living on part of a 5,000 acre land grant provided Huguenots by England.  It appeared that Jacob had with him his son Jacob Jr. (born c1660), and his son's two sons, Jacob III (born c1678) and John (born c1680).  [SOURCE:  TE Campbell Colonial Caroline]

It appears that most FLIPPOs residing in the US today owe their existence to this initial immigrant.  Subsequent FLIPPO descendants fought in the French and Indian Wars, American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War (both sides), WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm.

Early FLIPPO first names [1700 to 1800] residing in Caroline Co., VA included John, Garret, Joseph, Henry, Thomas, May, Francis, Sandaville, Robert, Gideon, Solomon, and William.

Other Caroline Co. neighbor families that FLIPPOs married:  BURRUS, SCOTT, CARR, LEWIS, CLARK, GARRETT, and PENDELTON.

Three parts of the FLIPPO family left Caroline Co. in late 1700s and migrated to:  (i) Kentucky (Logan, Hickman, and Christian Counties), (ii) another group about 1800 left for North Carolina (Caswell Co.) and apparently did not stay long, moving on to Tennessee about 1810-1820 (Lawrence, Moore, Franklin, Coffee, Hamilton, and Rhea Counties), and (iii) a third group about the same period 1810-1820 left Caroline Co. for Alabama (Madison, Jackson, Marion, and Walker Counties).

I have found many instances where FLIPPO was recorded as FLIPPS, the "o" being mistaken as a "s."  I have found few instances where FLIPPO was recorded as FLIPPIN or FLIPPEN but very few.

Most FLIPPOs living today think they are descended from Italy, a few from Scotland and others France.  Most cannot trace their heritage further back than 1790.  I have about 25 separate FLIPPO family trees beginning 1790 to 1820 which comprise the group mentioned above I have been working on.  I have over 3,000 persons listed in total of which 1,200 +/- or FLIPPOs.

I have often wondered if there might be a connection between them and the FLIPPINs.
